Lessons in Leadership with Fiona Mannion

Fiona Mannion former Managing Director of Damart the womenswear business, whose UK operation is based in Bingley, West Yorkshire has worked across Asia, the US and Europe in both cross-group and business unit leadership roles.

As Fiona moves into a more NED and Interim-focused phase of her career, she shares with us, some insights into what makes an effective leader.

What values are more important to you as a leader?

“Be open, honest, and transparent so that everyone you meet has the best chance of getting to know the real you – they might even like you!

Do what you love doing – if you are enthusiastic about your work and what you do, it gives you the energy and drive to make things happen.

Have a sense of humour! Find the fun and enjoy the laughter along the way.”

Who is a leader that you admire and why?

“Our late Queen – she was known to be a great listener and also believed in the principle of treating everyone with respect which I think is vital in creating a culture that colleagues want to be part of.”

In your view what is the most important skill for a leader to have?

“Clarity of thinking and focus – there will always be lots of opportunities and issues competing for your time and so identifying where you invest your time and energy and that of your team is crucial.”

What one personal experience have you had that made you a better leader?

“We had a cyber intrusion a couple of years ago which brought the business to a virtual standstill, in August when most of our Leadership team was on holiday. I had no alternative but to brief their direct reports and was transparent about the situation and that I needed them to step up and help. The natural leaders for each business area quickly emerged and frequently I found myself in a supporting role because there was someone else who knew the area better and so it gave a whole new meaning to the business mantra, ‘Either lead, follow or get out of the way!'”

What motivates you to be a leader?

“Getting things done. I like to feel that I have made a worthwhile difference and am happy to be held to account.”

What characterises a good leader in your view?

Vision – the ability to see current and potential opportunity based on experience, insight and sound gut feel and the business acumen to know how to make it happen.

Communication skills – the ability to paint a clear picture that other people can understand, are motivated by and want to be a part of.

Integrity – to be honest, trustworthy, consistent, and constant so that people are sure of who you are and what matters to you.”

What is the most difficult aspect of being a leader?

“There are very few occasions where I have felt like a “lone” leader. I had great colleagues at Damartex and Damart UK where together we discussed, debated and ultimately agreed a course of action. On the occasions where I have had to take a decision that not everyone is aligned with, I remind myself that my role is to make the best decisions I can for the business, based on the information I have, not to be the most popular person in the room.”
